Wolf Burner Clicks but Will Not Light: A Newton Walkthrough
Clicking proves the spark module is firing and says nothing about gas arriving. Work out whether one burner or all of them are affected, check cap seating and port blockage, then treat any delay before ignition as urgent rather than an inconvenience.
There is a version of this fault that people live with for months. The burner clicks, you wait, and eventually it catches with a soft thump. It works, so it gets tolerated. That delay is the one symptom in this whole article that should not be tolerated, and the walkthrough below builds up to why.
One thing comes before all of it. If there is a smell of gas that does not clear, get out of the house and make the call to the gas utility from outside. That is not a repair call and it does not belong to us.
One burner, or all of them? Answer that first
This single question halves the problem before you touch anything. Turn each burner in turn and note which light, which click, and which do neither. One burner misbehaving while the rest are fine points squarely at that burner’s own hardware: the cap, the ports around its rim, and the electrode beside it. Every burner misbehaving points somewhere shared — the spark module, the gas supply to the appliance, or the earth the ignition system relies on.
A detail that confuses people at this stage: on many ranges every electrode clicks when you turn a single knob, because they share one module. That is normal and it is not evidence of a fault. What matters is which burner lights, not which ones click.
A third and separate condition is clicking that will not stop even with every knob turned off; there is a section on it further down.
Write down what you find before you start cleaning things, because cleaning changes the evidence. Which burners, which behaviour, and what happened just before it started. Seating, debris and the boil-over nobody mentioned
Most single-burner faults are mechanical and most of them are recent. A cap that sits a fraction proud of where it should is enough to change the flame path so that gas never reaches the spark properly. It looks fine at a glance; it is not fine.
Lift the cap off, wipe the rim and the burner base clean and dry, and set it back down. Press gently on one edge and then on the opposite one: a cap that has dropped properly into place sits flat and does not rock. If it rocks or spins freely, it is not located correctly — check that any locating pin or notch is engaged rather than resting alongside it.
Blocked ports are next. Those small openings around the burner rim carry the flame from the electrode around the ring, and one boil-over cooks a deposit into them that a wipe will not shift. Clear them with something that will not enlarge or scratch the opening — a needle or a stiff bristle, working gently, never a drill bit or anything you have to lean on. A port opened out is a permanently wrong flame.
Moisture is the quiet one. After a clean, water sits in the burner base and across the electrode, and ignition can be suppressed until every bit of it has evaporated. This gets misread as a fault caused by cleaning. Give it real drying time rather than a guess, and if you can lift the parts and dry them by hand rather than waiting, do that instead.
Where the spark is supposed to jump
A healthy spark is a bright, fast, blue-white snap that jumps a small gap between the tip of the electrode and the burner body beside it. That is the geometry the whole system depends on: the arc has to cross gas as it emerges. Get down to eye level in a darkened kitchen and look at where the spark is actually landing.
Two things go wrong with it. The ceramic sleeve around the electrode insulates the metal core from everything except the intended gap. Crack that sleeve — dropping a pan on it does it, so does thermal shock from a wet cloth on a hot top — and the spark takes the easier route through the crack to the nearest earthed metal. You still hear clicking, sometimes louder, but nothing arrives where the gas is.
The other is bridging. Boil-over residue, grease and salt build a conductive path across the gap, and the energy leaks along that path instead of arcing across it. The clue is a weak, dull or intermittent spark rather than a crisp one. Clean the ceramic and the tip carefully when the range is cold and off.
Both faults produce identical clicking, which is exactly the trap. Clicking confirms the module is firing. It tells you nothing whatsoever about whether gas is arriving or whether the arc is landing anywhere useful.
A delay is a fault report
When a burner clicks for several seconds before it catches, gas has been flowing into the kitchen for the whole of that period and then ignites all at once. That is what produces the thump, and that is why a delay ranks above a burner that does not light at all. A burner that fails to light is inert. A burner that lights late has been accumulating.
The cause is usually one of the ones already covered — a partly blocked ring, a cap out of position, a spark landing in the wrong place — so the checks in the sections above are the right ones. What does not apply is waiting to see whether it settles down, or switching to lighting it with a match. Both responses treat the accumulation as normal.

Continuous clicking with everything off
The module is a small electrical unit that generates the high-voltage pulses feeding the electrodes. It fires when a switch behind a knob tells it to, and stops when that switch opens again as the knob returns to off.
Clicking that carries on with every knob off means a switch is no longer opening. Moisture in a switch after a spill, residue that has worked down around a knob stem, or a failed switch itself will all hold the circuit made, and the module obediently keeps firing. It is not harmful in the way a gas fault is, but it will not stop on its own, and the sparking continues in the presence of burners you cannot see inside.
This is a hand-over point rather than a homeowner fix. The switches sit behind the control panel on the mains side of the appliance, and getting to them on a built-in range in a tight Auburndale kitchen means drawing the appliance out before anything is opened. Turn the range off at its isolator if you can reach one safely, and leave it there.
What is worth a call
To repeat the only thing in this article that is genuinely urgent: a gas smell that does not clear means leaving the building and calling the utility from outside, not calling a repair firm. Nothing below changes that.
Three symptoms should be booked rather than lived with. Ignition that is delayed by more than a moment. Sparking that continues with the controls off. And a burner that lights and then drops out on its own, which is a supply or flame-sensing behaviour rather than an ignition one.
What a visit adds is the part of the system you cannot see from the top: whether the module is producing a full-strength pulse, whether the electrode gap is within specification, whether gas pressure at the appliance is what it should be, and whether an orifice or valve is passing correctly. Is a pin or a straightened paperclip safe for clearing the ports?
A fine needle used gently is acceptable; a paperclip usually is not, because it is soft enough to deform and thick enough to reshape the opening. Anything that widens, scores or rounds a port permanently alters the flame at that point, and no amount of cleaning afterwards restores it. Work only on a cold burner with the gas off, and stop if the deposit needs real force to shift.
There is a smell of gas in the kitchen. What now?
Leave the building, taking everyone with you, and call the gas utility from outside. Do not operate light switches, do not use the range, and do not stay indoors to investigate. A repair company is not the right first call and cannot make the property safe. Once the utility has attended and the supply is confirmed sound, an appliance fault can be diagnosed properly afterwards.
It only started after I cleaned the range. Why would that be?
Two reasons, and both are common. Water gets into the burner base and across the electrode during cleaning, and ignition stays suppressed until it has fully dried out. Or the cap was lifted off and set back down slightly out of position, which changes where the gas emerges relative to the spark. Dry everything thoroughly, reseat the cap until it sits flat without rocking, and retest.
